Mark S. Sutton

Sutton became chairman of the International Paper Board of Directors on January 1, 2015, and CEO on November 1, 2014. Immediately prior to becoming CEO, he served as president and chief operating officer. He has been with the company his entire career, having joined International Paper in 1984 as an engineer at the Pineville, La., mill. Over the last 38 years, his leadership positions with International Paper have included mill manager at the Thilmany, Wisc., mill; director of European corrugated packaging operations; vice president and general manager responsible for all corrugated packaging operations across seven countries in the Europe, Middle East and Africa region; vice president of corporate strategic planning; senior vice president, global supply chain; senior vice president, printing and communications papers for the Americas; and senior vice president, industrial packaging.

Sutton serves on the Board of Directors for The Kroger Company and is a member of the Business Roundtable and The Business Council. He also serves on the American Forest & Paper Association Board of Directors and the Memphis Tomorrow Board. He has received several industry awards for his leadership and accomplishments. He was named Executive Papermaker of the Year by PaperAge Magazine in 2018 and 2022, was honored in 2018 as TAPPI/PIMA Executive of the Year, and was named CEO of the Year in 2021 by FastMarkets.

Sutton earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from LSU.
