Fernando Guerrero is Varadero’s managing partner and chief investment officer. He founded Varadero Capital in 2009, representing the culmination of over 25 years of experience in the structured credit markets.

Guerrero began his career in Commercial Banking at Texas Commerce Bank and joined the asset-backed securities group at Chemical Bank following its acquisition of TCB. Over the following two decades, he developed a reputation for building and managing global securitization and debt capital markets businesses at Banker’s Trust; Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette; TD Bank; and ABN Amro.

In 2005, Guerrero moved to the buy side to join Merrill Lynch Investment Managers (MLIM) as the head of the newly formed Global Structured Products Group. Following MLIM, Guerrero became the chief executive officer and chief investment officer of NIBC Credit Management, Inc. (NIBC CMI), where he was responsible for all aspects of NIBC CMI’s North American activities, including its investment management business.

Guerrero has bachelor’s and master’s degrees in finance from LSU, and he is a graduate of the Program for Management Development at The Harvard Business School. He is also a member of the board of Island Finance, LLC.

What is your favorite memory involving LSU?
Home football games on Saturday night

What makes LSU unique?
LSU is a unique school with a unique culture. There is a balance of academics/social/school spirit.

Why did you choose to attend LSU?
I felt LSU would develop my skills all around including the academic component.

Why do you support LSU?
Because LSU altered the course of my life.

If someone asked you why he/she should make a gift to LSU, what would you say?
A gift to LSU makes a meaningful difference.

What is your vision for LSU, and how do you think philanthropy can drive that vision?
LSU needs to be cemented as the flagship university in the state of Louisiana, and philanthropy can play a role in reminding the legislature in Louisiana of its duty and obligation to properly fund a vibrant and thriving LSU.

What motivated you to accept our invitation to be an inaugural member of the LSU Foundation National Board?
I had conviction that I could make a difference for an institution that made an important difference in my life.

What most excited you about being part of the National Board?
I am most excited about the opportunity to give back and assist in building the LSU brand.
