Laura C. Moffitt

Headshot of Laura C. Moffitt, LSU Foundation National Board Member.

Laura Cordell Moffitt of Bellaire, Texas, is a native of Lafayette, La., and an alumna of LSU, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in geology in 1979. She went on to work for Phillips Petroleum in Houston and her expertise was the exploration of Gulf of Mexico onshore and offshore properties. She was a pioneer in the field as one of the first women to do wellsite work offshore, where her Bourré skills came in handy.

In 1995, while working with a small independent exploration company, Moffitt successfully secured financing for acquisition of acreage to pursue shallow bright spots in East Texas.

Although currently retired, Moffitt enjoys exploring the geology of various national parks throughout the country, especially Grand Teton National Park. She has been a member of the LSU College of Science Board since 2016. Moffitt is married to Jay Moffitt, also a geologist, and they have four children and two grandchildren.
